Caption: DNA repair protein molecule. Molecular model of the structure of the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) repair protein XPD. A molecule of DNA (red) is passing through the protein. XPD is composed of four domains: HD1 (blue), HD2 (green), 4FeS (orange) and the Arch (pink). Mutations in the amino acid sequence of this protein can lead to three different diseases. The sites of the mutations are shown as spheres and are colour-coded: the red mutations lead to xeroderma pigmentosum (extreme sensitivity to sunlight), the purple mutations lead to trichothiodystrophy (brittle hair and scaly skin) and the gold mutations lead to xeroderma pigmentosum and Cockayne syndrome (stunted growth and premature ageing).
