Caption: Darkfield illumination light micrograph of a Stentor amethystinus heterotrich ciliate. This species contains endosymbiotic algae (Chlorella sp., green dots). S. amethystinus has a red-violet colour caused by stripes of purplish pigment granules between its ciliary rows. Around the rim of the cell (top) fused cilia form membranelles that beat to collect food. Magnification: x114 when printed 10 centimetres high.
