Caption: Darkfield illumination light micrograph of Stentor amethystinus heterotrich ciliates. This species contains endosymbiotic algae (Chlorella sp., green dots). S. amethystinus has a red-violet colour caused by stripes of purplish pigment granules between its ciliary rows. Around the rim of the cell fused cilia form membranelles (white) that beat to collect food. Magnification: x114 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
