Caption: Stentor roeseli heterotrich ciliates, dark field illumination micrograph. These unicellular organisms can stretch to reach a length of more than 1 millimetre. The body is covered with rows of cilia. Around the rim of the wide end of the cell fused cilia form membranelles that beat to collect food. They mainly feed on algae but also take bigger prey such as rotifers. Magnification: x71 when printed 10 centimetres high.
