Caption: Pleurisy and pneumonia. Frontal X-ray of the lungs of a 2-year-old boy, showing inflammation of the membranes (pleurae) that surround the lungs, a condition known as pleurisy. The right lung is affected here (at left), and is also itself inflamed, a condition known as pneumonia. Pleurisy can be caused by various conditions, but viral infections are the most common. Pneumonia can be caused by both viral and bacterial infections. The presence of both conditions is referred to as pleuropneumonia.
