Caption: Brain fibres and structures. 3D diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of myelinated white matter nerve pathways (coloured) in a normal brain, overlaid on a sagittal T2-weighted 2D MRI scan of the brain. This scan passes through the middle of the brain. Diffusion tensor imaging measures the direction of water diffusion, which in the brain reveals the orientation of nerve fibres. The technique is also known as tractography (tract density imaging), with the resulting image known as a tractogram.
