LCROSS mission. Artwork of NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS, centre left) approaching the Moon (top right). LCROSS will search for water in a permanently shadowed crater at the Moon's south pole. Ahead of LCROSS, the Centuar rocket the spacecraft was launched on has impacted the Moon. LCROSS will fly through the plume of debris created by this impact, taking readings. LCROSS itself will then impact on the Moon's surface where it will carry out further experiments. LCROSS was launched as a secondary payload on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) on 18th June 2009.
