Caption: Formation of the Himalayas. Computer artwork showing the geological structure under the Himalaya mountain range. The peaks of the mountains are shown in white. The Himalayas were formed through the collision of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian continental plates (blue-grey, bottom). This started a process known as thrust tectonics. The colliding tectonic plates forced layers (strata) of rock (brown rows) to slide over one another (see red arrows), rising up and thickening the Earth's crust as they did so.
