Godfrey Hounsfield (1919-2004), British electrical engineer and inventor of the CT (computed tomography) scanner (top left). The machine enabled the first detailed scans of soft tissue. Hounsfield shared the 1979 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine with Allen McLeod Cormack for his work. Photographed in 1989.
