Caption: Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of muscovite (hydrous potassium aluminium silicate), a silicate mineral. Muscovite is one of the most common minerals in rocks, existing in igneous, metamorphic & sedimentary formations. Its tabular crystals (pseudo-hexagonal or triangular in outline) are arranged in flexible & elastic laminae (sheets), that are often very thin. Muscovite is used as an electrical or heat insulator, and as an additive of paper, rubber & fireproof paint. Magnification: x11 at 6x6cm size.
