Caption: Light micrograph of a thin section of a bi- metallic material. The horizontal orange stripe is a layer of copper, sandwiched between two other metal layers. Bi-metals exploit the different thermal expansion or electrical characteristics of metals in a way that highly-mixed alloys can not. In 'sandwich' type bi-metals, as seen here, the electrical conductivity of copper is paired with the mechanical strength of the other two layers. This may be used in circuits that are designed to withstand harsh conditions or excessive mechanical vibration. Magnification x30 at 6x4.5cm size.
