Light micrograph of a thin section of a silver/nickel composite metal. Composite metals such as this are used where the two constituent elements may not be alloyed in the normal fashion. Here, fibres of silver are held in a matrix of nickel. The resultant composite has a very high electrical conductivity, but resists the tendancy of pure silver to weld under high currents.
