Caption: MODEL RELEASED. CMS detector hall, CERN. This hall will house the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector within an underground cavern located in Cessy, France. CMS is one of six detector experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a particle accelerator at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland. It is a broad-range detector that measures all particles and physical processes that emerge during proton collisions within the LHC. The main goal of CMS is to detect Higgs bosons, elementary particles that have been predicted to exist but have yet to be proved (as of 2007). Photographed in September 2005.
