Caption: Brain fibres and eyeballs. 3D diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of myelinated white matter nerve pathways in a normal brain, seen from the front (anterior view). Also shown here is a 2D axial MRI scan through the brain at the level of the eyes (lower centre). Diffusion tensor imaging measures the direction of water diffusion, which in the brain reveals the orientation of nerve fibres. The technique is also known as tractography (tract density imaging), with the resulting image known as a tractogram.
