Light micrograph of a shear surface of a sample of silicon. The shear surface is created when the sample is subjected to lateral stress. When the sample fails, the two new faces slide over each other. The horizontal streaking shows the direction of shear, the vertical and diagonal lines run parallel to the crystal lattice axes of the silicon. Interference contrast illumination. Magnification: x160 at 6x7cm size.
