Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of crystalline tungsten. Tungsten (symbol W, atomic number 74) is a grey, hard, metallic element. It is used extensively in steel alloys, where it imparts great hardness. This is used in the manufacture of armour plate and cutting tools. Tungsten is also used in filament light bulbs and thermionic valves due to its very high melting point (3,370 Celsius). Like many metals, it exhibits a crystalline structure at a microscopic level. Magnification unknown.
