Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph of minute crystals of silver. These have been obtained by chemical reduction of a solution of a silver salt. Silver has the chemical symbol Ag, and is a lustrous, white precious metal. It has been known since pre- history, its softness and malleability making it useful in the production of early jewellery and coinage. Silver has a high thermal and electrical conductivity, and so has been used in the electronics industry. Silver halides are used extensively in the photographic industry as the light-sensitive components of photographic films and papers. Magnification x25 at 6x7cm size.
