A hydrocephalic shunt is used to treat hydrocephalus, an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. The shunt, a prosthetic one-way valve, would normally be positioned in the abdomen, where it drains the excess CSF from the brain to the peritoneal cavity to be reabsorbed into the blood stream. Here the shunt has detached and moved to the pelvis.
