Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of stitchwort flower (Stellaria graminea) pollen grains. The pollen grain at left is hydrated, the one at right is dehydrated. All living pollen grains are able to absorb and release water. Thus, each grain can exist in either of two morphologically different states, the dehydrated and the hydrated condition. S. graminea is a species of flowering plant in the Caryophyllaceae family (carnations), known commonly as lesser stitchwort, grass-leaved stitchwort, or grass-like starwort. It is a common plant of waysides, hedgerows and open woodlands. Magnification: x1500 when printed at 10cm wide.
