Caption: Synthetoceras, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal has a distinctive forked nasal horn. It is an example of a protoceratid, an animal resembling but not related to deers. Synthetoceras lived from 13 to 5 million years ago, during the Miocene. It reached a body length of around 1.6 metres. Its fossils have been found in North America.
