Caption: Gabriele Rabel (1880-1963), Austrian botanist, physicist and philosopher. Rabel studied botany as an undergraduate at the University of Vienna, undertaking experimental work on colour adaptation of plants to their surroundings. However, after developing an interest in theoretical physics Rabel received her PhD in physics. Her interests expanded to include philosophy and philology and she moved to Germany to undertake research at the Goethe Archives in Weimar. From the early 1930s Rabe became a regular contributor to the US Science Service, writing articles on a wide breadth of topics. Photographed in Cambridge, UK, in 1938.
