Caption: Mary Jane Rathbun (1860-1943), US zoologist. Rathbun specialized in the study of crustaceans. She worked for the United States Fish Commission and later at the United States National Museum in the Division of Marine Invertebrates. Her work at the Smithsonian Institution spanned nearly 60 years. She described over 1000 new species, and many species have been named for her. Photographed by John Howard Pearce in 1927.
