Caption: Rathe, Folkers and Kaczka, US antibiotics researchers. At left is US chemist Fern Pfafflin Rathe (1930-2013) with her colleagues US biochemist Karl August Folkers (1906-1997) and US organic chemist Edward Anthony Kaczka (born 1914). All three worked as researchers for Merck Pharmaceuticals Company, and together they were the first to isolate the antibiotic cathomycin in 1955. Rathe worked at Merck from 1952 to 1956. Folkers received numerous awards for his work, including the Perkin Medal (1960), the William H. Nichols Medal (1967), the Priestley Medal (1986) and the National Medal of Science (1990).
