Caption: De Laguna and Birket-Smith, US and Danish anthropologists. At left is US ethnologist, anthropologist and archaeologist Frederica (Freddy) Annis Lopez de Leo de Laguna (1906-2004), talking to her research partner Danish philologist and anthropologist Kaj Birket-Smith (1893-1977) in 1937. They were at a conference where they were presenting their latest research on historic and prehistoric art and culture in Alaska. De Laguna chaired the anthropology department at Bryn Mawr College and was elected president of the American Anthropological Association. Birket-Smith specialized in the culture and language of the Inuit and Eyak. He was a member of Knud Rasmussen's 1921 Thule expedition. Photographed on 18 March 1937 by Fremont Davis (1915-1977).
