Caption: US psychologists with laboratory rat and pet cat. From left to right: US psychologists Norman Raymond Frederick Maier (1900-1977), Nathan M. Glaser (c.1914-2011), and Barbara Jean Sherburne (later Stewart, born 1914). All three worked at the University of Michigan, where Maier taught from 1931 to 1977. Maier is holding one of the rats used in their experiments, while Sherburne is holding her cat 'Peter', who lived in the laboratory. Maier authored the classic 'Principles of Animal Psychology' (1935) based on his research with laboratory rats.
