Caption: Polarised light micrograph of crystals of sulphur. Sulphur is a yellow, brittle, crystalline non- metallic element (symbol S). It occurs naturally in native form, and in sulphide ores such as galena and zinc blende. Its main use is in the production of sulphuric acid. Sulphur is also found extensively in the body, as a component of proteins and in keratin (nails, hair, etc,). As an isolated element it exists in several allotropic forms, most of which are based on the eight-member S8 ring. Magnification x12 at 35mm size.
