Caption: Grey cast iron. Light micrograph of "grey" cast iron in thin section. Cast iron is an alloy of iron and carbon, where the carbon content is 2.5- 4%. Grey cast iron also contains 2-5% silicon, which causes some of the carbon in the metal to form deposits of graphite, seen here in black. The flakes of graphite act as shock-absorbers, making the metal less brittle and easier to machine. Grey cast iron is widely used to make such items as lamp posts, drain pipes and railings. Its main advantages are ease of casting (moulding) and machining, and low cost. Magnification unknown.
