Caption: Aluminium-copper alloy. Light micrograph of a thin section of an aluminium alloy containing 25% copper. The smooth raised areas are deposits of copper, embedded in a surrounding matrix of aluminium crystals. Alloys are made by dissolving together different metals when molten. In this alloy the copper has crystallised separately due to its higher melting point and slow cooling of the mixture. Aluminium-copper alloy has greater mechanical strength than pure aluminium, which is one of the most versatile and useful metals in industry. Magnification unknown.
