Curly toes. Curly toes is a common congenital (present at birth) deformity in children where one or more toes on the foot curl underneath. This results from shortened tendons on the underside of the foot. Treatment for children under 1 year old is by podiatric manipulation such as foot strapping. For children aged 5 or under, a tenotomy (tendon surgery) is performed, and if aged 6 or older, an operation known as a 'soft tissue tendon transfer' is performed.
