Caption: White phosphorus burning in air. White phosphorus is a highly reactive form of the element phosphorus. It reacts with the oxygen in the atmosphere to form phosphorus pentoxide (white fumes). Once ignited, it burns with a fierce flame and is very difficult to extinguish as it will reignite at relatively low temperatures. For this sample before ignition, see clips K007/2047.
