Caption: Pipe smoking, schlieren image. Schlieren photography is an imaging technique that is used to show changes in the density of fluids and gases such as air, caused here by the heat of the lighter flame and the warmth of the human body. The flame and hot air from the lighter produce a distinct rising plume. Weaker thermal convection is also seen from the smoker himself. Photographed at Pennsylvania State University, USA.
