Caption: Fan and candle, schlieren image. Schlieren photography is an imaging technique that is used to show changes in the density of fluids and gases such as air, caused here by the heat of the candle flame and the turbulence of the air from the fan. The candle's plume is captured by the fan and rolled up within its blade-tip vortices.The image was taken with a 1 microsecond exposure in order to 'freeze' the air motion. Photographed at Pennsylvania State University, USA.
