Ectropion of the eye of a 94 year old woman, in which the lower eyelid has turned outwards away from the eye to expose the inner surface. This disrupts the distribution of tears in the eye, resulting in irritated, dry and painful eyeballs along with excessive tearing. This case is typical of senile ectropion, caused by a loss of tissue elasticity and muscle tone in old age. Treatment is with surgery to tighten the muscle that holds the eyelid in place. While waiting for surgery, a lubricant can be used to relieve dryness.
