Caption: Skin cancer scar. Healed scar on a 64 year old man's shoulder after surgery to remove a squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cells are flat scale-like cells in the upper layers of the skin. Squamous cell cancer is the second most common type of skin cancer. Most cases arise from pre-cancerous lesions known as solar keratoses, which are caused by sun damage. It mostly affects the elderly and is most common in men.
