Caption: Averroes statue, by the walls of Cordoba, Spain, where he was born. Averroes (1126-1198) was an Islamic physician and philosopher. His full Arabic name is Abu al-Walid Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Rushd, often given as Ibn Rushd (The Commentator). He served as a judge and a physician in Spain and Morocco, and wrote Kulliyat fi al tib (General Medicine, 1162-1169), as well as commentaries on Aristotle. Averroes' work was widely translated into Latin, and later used by Aquinas as a basis for his works.
