The simulation models the maximum peak intensity of ground shaking in the San Francisco Bay and surrounding area, with the colours darkening to red as the shaking intensifies along 480 kilometres of the San Andreas Fault (red line). The shaking spreads as seismic waves radiate away from the rupturing fault line. The colour scale runs from I to X (scale at top right). This simulation is 75 seconds long. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake occurred on 18 April 1906 at 05:12 local time. With a moment magnitude of 7.8, it was one of the worst disasters in US history. Around 3000 people died and much of San Francisco (labelled SF on the perspective view) was destroyed by the earthquake and the resulting fire.
