Caption: Chemical imaging fingerprinting. Researcher holding one of a number of fingerprint images produced from a new fingerprinting technique that is being developed. Unlike traditional methods this technique collects the chemical residues left by a person when they touch something. These are then analysed in a spectroscopic microscope and the information is processed to build up a chemical photograph of the print. This could potentially detect the diet, race and sex of a suspect, as well as identifying traces of items they came in contact with. Photographed at Imperial College London, UK.
