Caption: Jellyfish in marine lake. The saline waters of this marine lake, found on the Pacific islands of Palau, are sufficiently isolated from the sea that unique species can develop. This lake is meromictic, meaning the waters do not mix and become stratified. Huge numbers of stingless Mastigias jellyfish (seen here) migrate around the lake following the sunlight. The unique conditions arise because the connection to the surrounding ocean is through channels in the limestone rock, leading to little exchange of animal life.
