Caption: Cellular packaging of DNA. Artwork of a strand of the genetic material DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) unwound from a human figure (left). Emerging from the human figure are cells, the basic unit of body tissues, with nuclei (red). Inside the nucleus is the genetic material in the form called chromatin. This condenses to form structures known as chromosomes (one at centre) during cell division. The DNA in chromatin can be unravelled to to reveal the double helix structure (right). The DNA in a cell nucleus, which is less than 0.1 millimetres across, is over 2 metres in length when unravelled.
