Caption: Aneuploidy theory of cancer. Artwork showing the stages in the aneuploidy theory of the formation of a cancerous tumour. The chromosomes in a cell nucleus (far left) are exposed to a carcinogenic, or toxic substance (yellow warning symbol). This results in an abnormal number of chromosomes being formed during cell division (next diagram), producing cancerous cells (flat, centre). The last diagram shows cancerous cells multiplying to form a tumour within a block of tissue.
