Caption: Asthma and mucus overproduction. Artwork showing how the body's immune response causes the inflammation seen in asthma. The chest of a human figure is at top right, with two expanded views of the lung airways shown. At upper left, normal airways are seen with immune cells (green) and mucus (yellow). The immune cells produce signalling molecules called cytokines, which in turn induce bronchial hyper-responsiveness and excess mucus production. This can lead to inflammation and bronchospasm (contraction of the bronchioles or small airways), as seen at upper right.
