Caption: Very high carbon steel. Light micrograph of a thin section of very high carbon steel. This sample contains 1.4% carbon by weight alloyed with iron. The metal has a pearlite (brown) and carbide (transparent) structure. Very high carbon steel is very strong but brittle. It is used for cutting tools and truck springs.
