Caption: Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov (1921-1992), Soviet orthopaedic surgeon. Ilizarov is most famous for inventing the Iliazarov apparatus, used to carry out lengthenings of leg and arm bones. The apparatus holds the bones in place as they heal, pulling them apart at a rate of around a millimetre a day. Iliazarov's awards include the Lenin Prize and Hero of Socialist Labour. He was elected to the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1991. Photographed in 1983, at the Kurgan Orthopaedy and Traumatology Research and Development Institute, Kurgan, Russia.
