Caption: Fedor Andreevitch Serbinenko (1928-2002), Soviet neurosurgeon and member of the Burdenko Neurosurgery Institute, demonstrating his pioneering aneurysm treatment method. The picture on the left shows the aneurysm in the patient's brain. The picture on the right shows the patient's brain after the aneurysm has been removed. An aneurysm is a weakening of a blood vessel wall, causing the blood vessel to swell. If an aneurysm bursts, it can cause fatal internal bleeding. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 1977.
