Caption: Valeri Alekseevich Legasov (1936-1988), Chernobyl investigator and Soviet scientist. Trained as an inorganic chemist, Legasov is best known for his role as chief investigator of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which occurred on 26 April 1986. Legasov presented a comprehensive report on Chernobyl, but failed to gain recognition for this work. Suffering from depression and the effects of radiation, he committed suicide on the 2nd anniversary of the disaster. Photographed in 1983, in Moscow, Russia.
