Caption: Sergei Nikolaevich Vernov (1910-1982), Soviet physicist. Vernov pioneered cosmic rays experiments in the stratosphere using radio balloons carrying specially designed equipment. In the 1960s the launch of Soviet satellites allowed him study radiation belts around the Earth, and the magnetic fields around the Earth and the Moon. He was elected a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1968), and received several awards for his work, including the USSR State Prize and the Lenin Prize. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 1960.
