Caption: Fluorapatite crystals, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These are young crystals of calcium fluoride phosphate, or fluorapatite, a form of apatite. The crystals form different structures when grown under different conditions. Fluorapatite is used as an ingredient in toothpaste to transfer fluoride ions to tooth enamel and so strengthen it. Magnification: x12,500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
