This form of container is used to transport potatoes, fruit and vegetables. Though plastics are considered safe, hygienic, lightweight and durable and in this case, breathable, they are largely non-biodegradable, and where plastic waste ends up in the marine environment, particularly microplastics, they are harming aquatic animals. Some consider there is no alternative to landfill for wastes which are non-recyclable and non-combustible. Paper is fully recyclable and combustible but small paper bags are usually only suitable for short-term storage and transportation.
