Caption: Raleigh's El Dorado Expedition. 17th-century illustration of a scene from the El Dorado Expedition in north-eastern South America by English soldier and explorer Sir Water Raleigh (c.1554-1618). The expedition took place in April 1595, exploring the Guiana highlands and the Orinoco River. The scene depicted here, also featuring Captain George Gifford, shows a crew member being seized and eaten by a serpent-like monster (actually a crocodile) on the 'River of Lagartos' (River of Alligators). Raleigh's account of this expedition was published in 'The Discovery of Guiana' (1625).
