Caption: Fruit fly head. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the head of a fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. One of it's multifaceted compound eyes is visible (red). To the right of the eye are two antennae consisting of small fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions (aristas). On the snout (at lower centre) is a proboscis (yellow) which is designed like a suction tube; palps of the mouthparts occur on either side of it. A number of long hairs on the head are used for touch. Drosophila melanogaster is widely used for genetic experiments because it reproduces rapidly and is easily manipulated in the laboratory. Magnification: x80 when printed at 10cm wide
